Rapid weight loss and pregnancy are the most common causes of excess abdominal skin
Dermolipectomy is the procedure performed to remove excess skin and abdominal adipose tissue, as well as to tighten rectus abdominus and external oblique muscles of the anterior abdominal wall. It often involves umbilical transposition. After this intervention the stomach is tight and abdominal muscles are strengthened, which has both aesthetic and functional benefits.
Preoperative procedure includes blood analysis, lung x-ray and obtaining an opinion of an internist-cardiologist.
The surgical intervention is performed under general anesthesia. A semi-arch incision is made above the pubic region and groins, which makes it barely noticeable after the recovery since it is completely covered by the underwear. The patient is kept in the hospital for 24 - 48 hours. The patient needs to be at rest for the first several days. The stitches are removed fifteen days after the intervention. Intensive physical strain is not recommended for the period of three to four weeks after the intervention, during which the patient must wear suitable corset.
