Asymmetry is a normal characteristic of each person. If it is very prominent, it requires surgical correction. About ten percent of patients, making appointments with plastic surgeons for the purpose of breast surgery, require such an intervention due to breast asymmetry.
Asymmetry may result from amastia (lack of breast), hypomastia (underdeveloped breast) or hypertrophy (large breast). This anomaly is divided into six categories:
- one breast is hypoplastic / aplastic, while the other is normal;
- both breasts are hypoplastic, or unequal in size;
- one breast is hypertrophic, while the other is normal;
- both breasts are hypertrophic, or unequal in size;
- one breast is hypoplastic, while the other hypertrophic;
- breast and pectoral muscle hypoplasia.
The guidelines for asymmetry correction are given based on these categories:
- one breast requires correction (augmentation or reduction),
- both breasts require correction (augmentation and/or reduction).
This surgical intervention should be performed after the completion of the entire breast development. Augmentation is usually performed by using silicone implants, although it is possible to increase the breast size by using patient’s own fat.
More information on breast reduction is available in the section Aesthetic surgery (breast reduction and breast lift).
Recommendation: If you suffer from a first degree breast asymmetry (breasts differ by up to 1/3 in volume), the surgical correction is not necessary. If you have the case of a second or third degree asymmetry, surgical correction is recommended. Of course, undergoing the operation is not just the matter of our decision, but it also depends on how we perceive our body and what we really want to achieve. This decision should not depend on the desires of our partners or some other person close to us.
