Tubular breasts are a developmental deformity characterized by a narrow base of the breasts, relatively small breasts, wide areolas and large nipples. The cause of this condition is the imbalance in the development of connective tissue of the breast. Namely the connective tissue of the breast is firm whereas the connective tissue of the areola and nipple is loose. Therefore, general growth of the breast becomes limited. Since collagenous fibers in the area of the areola are weak, the entire breast tissue "protrudes" forward through the areola and nipple (like a through hinged door). Therefore, the areola becomes large, breasts remain small in size and elongated, resembling a pipe (tube). Milk producing and breastfeeding are quite normal in these patients. The psychological effects of these anomalies are not negligible, especially for young girls in puberty and adolescence. Such girls may often suffer from embarrassment due to deformity they have, as well as from fear of rejection. Sometimes these patients become withdrawn; they do not confide in anyone and do not see how the problem could be solved. Consequently, a surgical intervention, as a solution for this problem, may have both aesthetic and psychological significance.
Surgical intervention: There are several ways to deal with this kind of deformity. Breast augmentation by using implants is often selected as the best solution, since it corrects the volume of the breast. If, despite the placement of implants, areola and nipples remain large and strained – the reduction of the areola and strengthening its connective tissue is highly recommended. Of course, a good result can be achieved even without implants, by periareolar reduction. Neither of these operations interferes with milk production or breastfeeding function.
