Gynecomastia is an enlargement of a man’s breasts. The causes for this condition may sometimes be determined during an examination by an urologist (unequal size of testicles, tumor) or an endocrinologist (a disorder of sex hormones - LH, FSH, prolactin, testosterone, AFP, beta HCG). As a part of an overall examination, it is necessary to perform biochemical blood analysis (especially to determine liver function indicators – direct, indirect bilirubin, AST, ALT, PT, PTT) as well as the ultrasound of both breasts. Ultrasound will clearly show which kind of tissue is dominant in the breasts - glandular or adipose tissue.
Surgical intervention
After remedying the primary problem, the aesthetic correction should be performed if breasts are growing constantly or if the patient feels discomfort and mental depression because of his condition. The procedure is performed mostly under general anesthesia, although there are methods that can be applied under local anesthesia. The cut is made at the junction of the nipple and the rest of the breast. The scar is barely noticeable.
Rarely is there a need to remove the excess of breast skin, together with the excess of adipose tissue. The result is visible immediately after surgery. The nicest aesthetic effect is achieved by breast liposuction because there is no visible scar around the nipple. This technique is primarily recommended in cases when the adipose tissue is dominant compared to the glandular tissue.
Echnique is primarily recommended in cases when the adipose tissue is dominant compared to the glandular tissue.
Protruding nipples
Large, prominent and drooping nipples represent a special aesthetic problem. Young people who have this problem are usually persistent in doing exercise, being on a diet although they are not obese, but the appearance of their breasts or nipples does not change a lot. Often this is the only problem in the male breasts. It should be determined whether the reason for such a condition is the excess of mammary gland, excess of fat or a large nipple. If the histopathologic analysis shows that the cause for the condition is the excess of mammary gland, the surgical intervention is performed to remove the rest of the gland. It is important to preserve the structure and the sensitivity of the nipple. This intervention is performed through a very small incision that is practically unnoticeable.
Postoperative course
The patient is kept in the hospital for 3-4 hour. The pain is mild and treated by painkillers. The patient can resume his regular, everyday activities after a few days, whereas intensive training is forbidden during the first month of recovery.
