Breast augmentation is one of the most common and most popular interventions in aesthetic surgery. This is a surgical intervention that gives a good result in a short period of time. Depending on the skin quality, breast tissue and the selection of implants, a silicone implant is placed beneath the pectoral muscle or beneath the fascia of the pectoral muscle.
Two types of implants
It is of great importance for you to inform your plastic surgeon during the examination what kind of breasts you would like to have and what you expect from the operation. Based on the examination the surgeon will present to you the plan of the operation, the position of the cut, the size, shape and volume of the implant. In general, there are two available options when it comes to the shape of implants, a round or anatomical (natural) implant. When the plastic surgeon gives you details about these kinds of implants – it is easy to make the final decision.
Before the operation it is necessary to perform breast ultrasound, blood tests and obtain a permit from an internist-cardiologist for the application of general anesthesia.
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia, and it takes about an hour. The incision may be made below the breast, at the level of the nipple or within the armpit. The incision is usually made below the breast, since in such a way the visibility is better during the operation from the surgeon’s perspective, and the scar is the least noticeable. The scar that remains after such an intervention is 3.5cm long, very thin and barely noticeable.
If the implant is placed beneath the muscle, pain occurs during the first two to three days after the operation and it can easily be alleviated by painkillers. If the implant is placed beneath the muscle fascia – there is virtually no pain. Any kind of heavy lifting and even driving a car is strictly forbidden during the first month of recovery after the operation. The patient is required to wear a medical bra for a month. Intensive physical exercises can be done only six weeks after the intervention. This operation does not interfere with the breastfeeding function in any way. Periodic examinations (ultrasound and mammography) may be performed without any problem. Performing a breast augmentation is not recommended until the completion of development, i.e. until eighteen years of age. Women who have given birth to a child should wait for a year before performing any kind of breast surgery.
